General
Decide on the type of care you are looking – is it home care, day care or in-patient care?
Find out of the hospice offers the form of care that you want.
Consider if there were any unique services offered by the hospice which you may prefer.
Ask about the hospice charges.
Check if you can receive hospice and palliative care while receiving curative treatment in the hospital.
Assess if you are in a condition where hospice and palliative care can benefit you and your caregiver.
Find out how experienced the caregivers are in your hospice of choice.
Ask about the type of training volunteers receive before starting to care for patients.
Ask about how your family may benefit from hospice services.
In-patient care
Check what is the patient-caregiver ratio in the hospice.
Ask if the hospice will customize meals according to nutritional requirements.
Find out about the live-in facilities available.
Ask about the daily routine for hospice residents and the visiting hours and regulations.
Enquire if the hospice would allow practitioners of alternative therapies to visit and treat patients; and the type of equipment available to provide the necessary care.
If you have pets, ask if your family is allowed to bring your pet to visit.
Day care
Check about the type of food provided and if they are suitable for your dietary needs and requirements.
Find out more about the various kinds of day care activities you can engage in and how often you are able to attend the day care sessions.
Ask if you are eligible for subsidized fees, what the size of the day care patient group is and if transport can be provided to and from your home.
Enquire if your my medication can be administered to you at the day care sessions.
Home care
Find out how often the hospice nurses and doctors will visit you at home.
Ask about the medical services that the hospice caregivers can provide you in your home.
Check if the hospice has a 24-hour emergency service and the typical response time.
Enquire if hospice caregivers can act as temporary caregivers if your primary caregiver needs to run some errands; or if a hospice caregiver be ‘attached’ to your primary caregiver permanently to help out on a daily basis.
Ask if your caregiver would need to pay to attend caregiver workshops.
If you require medical equipment, ask if they can be loaned freely or the cost of purchase or rental.
