The Singapore Hospice Council (SHC) is an umbrella body incorporating all organisations actively providing hospice and palliative care in Singapore. It was first registered as a charity in 1995 with five members. Dr. Seet Ai Mee was the Chairman of the First Board of the Singapore Hospice Council.
There are currently 8 full members of the SHC: Assisi Home and Hospice, Bright Vision Hospital, Dover Park Hospice, HCA Hospice Care, Methodist Hospice Fellowship, Metta Hospice Care, Singapore Cancer Society, and St Joseph’s Home and Hospice.
The Council is committed to improving the lives of patients with serious life limiting illnesses and supporting the loved ones of these patients. It aims to coordinate and promote hospice and palliative care in Singapore, train doctors, nurses, caregivers and volunteers and educate the public.
The Singapore Hospice Council publishes a quarterly newsletter (HospiceLink) and organizes Hospice Awareness Week every third year. It also deals with government and international agencies on behalf of its members.
The Education Committee of the SHC organises a three day Post-graduate Course in Palliative Medicine in association with the Singapore Medical Association. This course has been held every six months since July 1997. It is open to medical officers in government service and other doctors interested in gaining a basic understanding of palliative medicine.
Since April 2002, all medical students at the Medical Faculty of National University of Singapore have a one-day palliative care posting. This program is run by SHC’s Doctors’ Education Sub-Committee with the Department of Family Medicine at National University of Singapore. It includes lectures, small group workshops, tutorials as well as interviews with patients in hospice programs.
